These figures come from the live July fleet on this site, not from a marketing page written last year. Off-season rates drop well below them.
cheapest live summer day rate (small city car)
the band where most manual city cars sit
where automatics start (Kia Stonic, Opel Corsa)
deposit on selected economy cars
A big-brand desk inside the terminal pays terminal rent, staffs it around the clock and carries a fleet financed to stay young. All of that lands in your day rate. The independent companies of Athens keep their cars on cheaper lots near the airport and in town, meet customers in person, and hold vehicles a few years longer. The car you get is not showroom-new, but it is inspected, insured and typically 30 to 40 percent cheaper for the same week.
The second lever is what does not get added later. The totals compared on this site already include the mandatory charges, so the €53 Corsa is actually a €53 Corsa. At a desk, the same headline price often grows at the counter through excess-reduction upsells and airport fees that were never in the advert.
The third lever is you: dates and timing. Book two months ahead for July and you choose from the whole fleet; book two days ahead and you take what is left. Shoulder months are dramatically cheaper, and a Tuesday-to-Tuesday week often beats a weekend-to-weekend one because demand peaks around flights.

| Band | Cars you will see | Transmission | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| €25-49 | Suzuki Celerio, Mitsubishi Space Star | Manual | Two people, light luggage, tight budgets |
| €50-60 | Opel Corsa, Nissan Micra, Citroen C3, Ford Focus | Manual | The sweet spot: newer cars, still cheap |
| €55-75 | VW Polo, Kia Picanto, Hyundai i10, Citroen C3 | Automatic | Anyone who dislikes shifting in city traffic |
Free cancellation removes the risk from booking months ahead. Reserve the good price when you see it; if plans change, you walk away.
Manuals are usually cheaper, but not always: in the current fleet an automatic Polo lists below several manual superminis. Check both before assuming.
Collect full, return full, pay only for what you burn. Prepaid-fuel schemes almost always cost more than the petrol station across the road.
A Celerio-class car swallows two carry-ons, parks anywhere in the centre and burns less fuel. Upgrade only if your luggage genuinely demands it.
Prices move with demand. Put in your dates, tap the Economy filter, and take the best live offer before someone else does.
