The traditional rental strip of Athens. The wide avenue running from the centre toward the coast hosts a string of rental offices, easy to reach and easy to drive out of, with the coast road and the centre both minutes away.

Offices near the central square suit travellers already staying downtown: walk over after breakfast, sign, and drive off. Expect the handover itself to be on a side street; the square is bus and taxi territory.

Ten kilometres from the centre and the natural pickup point if your trip starts from a ferry. Suppliers meet arrivals at the gate areas by arrangement, the same flight-tracking logic as the airport, applied to boats.

Know the daktylios before you drive downtown

Central Athens operates a weekday traffic restriction zone called the daktylios, a ring around the innermost districts where access alternates by number plate on working days during the daytime, running roughly from autumn to mid-summer. Newer low-emission and electric vehicles are exempt, older petrol and diesel cars are not, and the rules get adjusted, so treat this as a thing to ask about, not a thing to memorise.

The practical version for a visitor: tell your supplier if you genuinely plan to drive inside the very centre on weekdays, and they will tell you whether the specific car is exempt. Most visitors never feel the restriction at all, because the sights the centre is famous for, the Acropolis, Plaka and Monastiraki, are walking territory anyway, and the daktylios does not apply on weekends or most of August.

The rental car earns its keep everywhere else: the coast, the mountains of Attica, Delphi, the Peloponnese. Use the metro for the old town, the car for the region, and the two never fight.
